Język polski jako obcy dla Głuchych – w poszukiwaniu dobrego terminu

Abstract

The paper deals with teaching Polish as a foreign language to the Deaf. The Deaf were first noticed in Polish as a foreign language pedagogy over ten years ago and the metaphor of “silent foreigners” has been used to describe their language situation. Teaching Polish to the Deaf is a new challenging path in Polish language teaching. The Deaf are in fact neither silent nor foreigners and teaching Polish to the Deaf differs strongly from teaching hearing foreigners or heritage users of Polish. The Deaf live in a multi-linguistic reality. They are not only Polish sign language and Polish language users. They learn other spoken languages and other sign languages as well. Having established a space for the Deaf in Polish language pedagogy we can now discuss the terminology and find successful methods to make Polish less foreign to the Deaf.
